BEIJING: China has introduced water rationing in certain areas in the central and eastern parts of the country, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Thursday. Though the government has revealed only few details of the problem caused by a heatwave, independent observers predicted a major water crisis that would severely affect the economy.
The country's meteorological bureau has issued its highest level emergency response to the current heatwave that has affected nine provinces and municipalities of eastern and central China.
The official China Radio International said half a million people in parts of Hunan province are finding it difficult to access drinking water due to drought caused by the heatwave.
The heatwave has claimed 10 lives in Shanghai, which has seen the worst summer month in July in the past 140 years. The city's hospitals have been inundated with people suffering from heat-related illnesses.
About one ton of fish is dying every day since the beginning of July at the Dafeng Fish Farm covering 30 ponds in Qingpu district near Shanghai, according to Liu Kelin, the director of the farm. "The hot weather raises the water temperature which in turn decreases the oxygen content in the ponds," Liu said.
