ISLAMABAD: A 53-year-old gunman, who was shot after five-hour standoff with police in Islamabad last week, briefly spoke to investigators on Monday from his hospital bed.
Sources said Malik Sikandar told them he had fired shots in the air out of anger after arriving near the president's house in a car along with his wife and two kids on Thursday last.
The standoff in the heart of the tightly-guarded city had brought life to a standstill in Islamabad.
Sikandar had claimed to have served in the Pakistan Air Force and the ISI. He had said he would talk only to a senior ISI official during the standoff.
The gunman had used insulting language against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and threatened to kill him.
Sources said investigators have been directed to ascertain his claims of his links with intelligence agencies.
"I did not want to bring harm to any official by my actions, but wanted to convey the message of Islam and importance of Sharia to media personnel present at the scene," Sikandar said in a statement.
Investigations have revealed that Sikandar pursued a diploma in associate engineering (electric) before setting up a firm UAE. He returned to Pakistan in 2009 and got addicted to heroin.
The gunman had undergone rehabilitation in 2012.
