Smoking turtle becomes TV sensation in China - China

BEIJING: A pet turtle in Changchun city who has been puffing away at 10 cigarettes a day has become a hit on Chinese television.

The reptile is so addicted to nicotine that it makes noises when it needs more cigarettes, and even trudges up to its owner, a restaurant chef, when he takes a break from his work and begins smoking, Liaoning TV reported.

The animal's affair with cigarettes began in June when the owner was trying to remove a thorn stuck in its underbelly. Since it was making a noise and disturbing his concentration, the owner tried to silence the reptile by sticking his cigarette into its mouth. Result: the turtle got hooked.

The pet's owner complained on local TV that he is spending too much on its rising demand for cigarettes and wants to put a stop to it.

The turtle's 'feat' has aroused a lot of curiosity on the Chinese internet, with some users posting comments that it amounted to animal abuse.
